Views from the Observation Deck
Located on the roof of the Hospital Building, the Observation deck, at over 800 feet above sea level, was the highest point in Essex County. From the deck, it was possible to see clear across the state of New Jersey, from the Delaware Water Gap in the west, to the New York City skyline in the east. The view was so spectacular in fact, that in the 1950's, the deck was used by spotters for the Civil Defense League to search the skies for enemy Russian planes.
